What is the average energy bill in the UK?

There is no single bill that fits every home. Your annual cost depends on the electricity and gas you use, each fuel's unit rate, and daily standing charges. Use a full year of meter readings with current rates for a more relevant estimate than a national average.

Low, medium and high usage examples

These broad annual consumption examples can help you understand how usage affects a bill. They are planning benchmarks, not predictions for a particular property; estimated costs change with rates, region, payment method and standing charges.

Medium2,700 kWh11,500 kWh
High4,100 kWh17,000 kWh

Why your bill might be different

The number of people at home, insulation, heating system, working from home and charging an electric vehicle all affect consumption. A heat pump moves heating demand from gas to electricity, so comparing only electricity use can be misleading.

Standing charges are paid each day that a connected fuel supply is active, even when little energy is used. Direct Debit payments can also smooth seasonal bills; the amount you pay each month is not necessarily what you used that month.

Find a better answer for your home

Use a full 12 months of electricity and gas kWh from your supplier app or bills for the closest calculation. If you do not have those, describe your home or use the accessible household form to get an indicative range.

Regional pricing and payment method can differ. The estimator uses a GB benchmark, not a personalised tariff quote; check the current benchmark rates before interpreting an estimate.

Good to know

What is a normal monthly energy bill?

There is no single normal amount: usage, tariff rates, standing charges and payment method all matter. An annual estimate divided by 12 is only an illustrative monthly average; Direct Debits may be set differently.

Does an electric-only home have a gas standing charge?

No. The estimator only includes a gas standing charge when gas usage is included. Your actual account arrangements should be checked on your bill.

Are these figures quotes?

No. Estimates are illustrative, based on assumed usage and the benchmark rates shown by the calculator. Your actual tariff and consumption determine your bill.

What is the most accurate way to compare?

Find annual kWh for each fuel on your latest bill or supplier app, then calculate against your actual tariff's unit and standing rates.
