How much electricity does a house use?
As a starting point, a smaller home might use around 1,800 kWh of electricity a year, a three-bedroom home around 2,700 kWh, and a larger home around 4,100 kWh. These are broad planning anchors, not limits: the people and equipment inside matter more than the bedroom count alone.

What adds to electricity use?
Charging an electric car at home may add around 2,000 kWh a year, depending on mileage and charging habits. A heat pump can add roughly 3,500–4,500 kWh of electricity while removing most or all gas heating demand. Electric storage heaters may add substantial use too.
Working from home can add around 300 kWh annually from computers, lighting and daytime appliances. An electric shower can add around 450 kWh, depending on its power and the length and number of showers.
Find your actual number
Look for annual electricity usage in kWh on your supplier app or latest bill. Do not confuse kWh, a quantity of energy, with the unit price in pence per kWh. The estimator lets you enter a known annual figure without adding an uncertainty range to that figure.
