How much gas does a house use?

Why gas use varies so much

A detached home typically loses heat through more external surfaces than a mid-terrace home. Insulation, the weather, thermostat settings and boiler controls can shift consumption substantially even between homes with the same number of bedrooms.

Working from home may add heating hours; our fallback adds around 800 kWh of gas when a gas boiler is selected. That is a planning assumption, not a measurement of your home.

What if I do not use mains gas?

The estimator sets gas usage and gas standing charge to zero for heat pumps, electric storage heaters, oil or LPG heating and other non-gas choices. Oil and LPG fuel costs are not covered, so the displayed total is not your complete heating bill if you use either.

Some homes have a gas connection for cooking or hot water even if space heating is electric. If you have annual gas kWh, enter it directly in the known-usage tab for a more faithful result.

Use your bill to check

Gas meters may show cubic metres rather than kWh. Your supplier bill converts readings into billable kWh and is the right place to find annual usage. Compare a full year because winter heating makes a single month unrepresentative.

Is 11,500 kWh of gas a year normal?

It is a useful medium-use planning benchmark, but your home's insulation, size and heating habits may lead to a very different figure.

Does a heat pump need gas?

A fully electric heat pump system can have zero gas heating usage. Some hybrid systems retain gas, so check your setup and meter readings.

Does the estimate include oil or LPG?

No. If you select oil or LPG, the calculator excludes that fuel cost explicitly.

Why is my winter gas bill much higher?

Space heating is seasonal. A full year's gas kWh is more useful than multiplying a winter month by 12.
