Switching can be straightforward, but a useful comparison starts with your real usage and the full tariff terms. Take time to check the offer and save the details so you can compare the final bill with what you expected.

Before you choose

  1. Find annual electricity and gas use in kWh from a recent bill or supplier app. A Direct Debit amount alone does not show how much energy you used.
  2. Compare unit rates and daily standing charges for each fuel. Include your region and payment method, and calculate estimated annual cost on the same basis.
  3. Check that the tariff works with your meter: single-rate, Economy 7 or another time-of-use arrangement. If you have a smart meter, ask whether it will remain compatible and whether the tariff has requirements.
  4. Read the contract end date, any exit fee, eligibility rules and what happens after a fixed term. Check service terms and whether the offer requires online billing or particular payment arrangements.
  5. Confirm the tariff is available to your address and keep a copy of the written offer, rates and terms.

During the switch

Follow the supplier’s instructions and provide accurate meter details. If asked, submit readings to both suppliers around the changeover and keep a dated record. Do not cancel payments to your current supplier simply because a switch has started; settle charges that are properly due and ask either supplier about any mismatch.

In Great Britain, domestic switches have regulated processes and a switching guarantee for eligible cases. Check current Ofgem guidance for how it works and possible exceptions. The switching process is different in Northern Ireland, so do not assume GB timeframes and protections apply there.

After the switch

Check the new supplier’s opening account, tariff rates and first bill. Your old supplier should issue a final bill; check its closing reading and account balance, and ask for a refund if money remains in credit. If the final bill or switch details look wrong, raise the issue with the relevant supplier and retain the complaint reference.
